Are these the most fearlessly stylish men on the planet? Italian photographer Daniele Tamagni’s beautiful book portrays the unequalled Congolese Sapeurs.
Any man who considers dressing a little more than just putting on clothes will appreciate this book, The Gentlemen of Bacongo – The Importance of Being Elegant, by Italian photographer Daniele Tamagni. A largely photographic tome, it dwells on a gang of chaps, such as Arca, Lalhande, KVV Mouzieto, Lamame and Hassan Salvadore from Brazzaville in the Congo, and their adherence to the Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes, the ‘religion of clothing’ otherwise known as La SAPE….

<CityStates> is a series of international exhibitions exploring the cultural dynamics between cities and states. A new collaboration between Liverpool Biennial and the Contemporary Urban Centre has secured space for these exhibitions, initiated and supported by embassies, foreign governments, international agencies or galleries, which in past editions of the Biennial have been spread across the city. <CityStates > will be exhibited in converted 19th century warehouses in Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle.
In previous Liverpool Biennial festivals, there has been a ‘collateral programme’ organised or supported by embassies, international agencies or galleries and promoted by Liverpool Biennial (in the same way that Venice Biennale promotes the ‘country pavilions’ inside and outside the Giardini in Venice). 2010 will be the first year Liverpool Biennial has reserved space exclusive for this purpose. City States will be realised in collaboration with the Contemporary Urban Centre, Liverpool.
NORWAY, SWEDEN, ICELAND, DENMARK, FINLAND: NORDIC ARTISTS

NICE presents artworks from 8 contemporary Nordic artists, in relation to the Liverpool Biennials 2010 theme ‘Touched’, the artists chosen for the Nordic pavilion find inspiration from urban landscapes, social environments, identities, rhythms in movement and fetishized commodities. PLUS AN AUCTION OF MARK’S ANTIQUARIAN BOOKS
Dear Friends,
Please show your support and come join us for a fantastic night at The Bloomsbury Theatre on 15th September at 7.30pm to remember Mark Blanco in all his guises and to raise funds for the continuing investigation into his unlawful killing.
Ahmed Dickinson Cardenas, virtuoso Cuban guitarist will perform alone and with Emma, Mark’s sister, in a programme of music from Cuba to Spain to Argentina. For a truly energetic fun-filled second half Graffiti Classics, fresh from this year’s Edinburgh Festival, will guarantee to leave you with a smile on your face! Not gypsy, not jazz, not trad, not classical but scintillatingly slap-stick with brilliant arrangements and mischievous humour.
There will also be an auction of more of Mark’s antiquarian and other books and a couple of surprises along the way I am sure, if last year’s event is anything to go by!
PLEASE come and support us on September 15th and contribute to the ongoing fight for justice. The funds raised from last year’s event enabled us to have some vital biomechanical analysis done on the CCTV footage from the night of Mark’s death.
Tickets are available from the Bloomsbury Theatre box office
