Stephanie Quayle and Darren Jackson build a 30ft sculpture for Mannifest

Stephanie Quayle and her husband Darren Jackson have erected a monumental sculpture of Manannan, the Manx sea god, for Mannifest 2012. The couple’s efforts were documented on BBC NEWS today as the imposing sculpture is installed at the Glen Lough campsite in the Isle of Mann.

The majority of the sculpture was made using materials from Manx gardens, including bracken, conifers and evergreens, while the face is carved from a tree trunk found on the festival site. Stephanie Quayle said, “We like to think that he looks like he could get up and walk back into nature at any point.”

Stephanie Quayle takes part in the LUMA Foundation’s most recent event at Arles 2012

To The Moon Via The Beach was a new form of exhibition that took place in the Roman Amphitheatre of Arles. It was part of an artistic programme proposed by the LUMA Foundation that aims to give the inhabitants of city and its visitors ‘the chance to encounter the work and ideas of several contemporary visual artists’, including Stephanie Quayle.

At the start of the exhibition, visitors encountered an arena covered in 700 tonnes of sand. Over the course of four days, the terrain was slowly transformed from a beach to a lunar landscape by a team of world-class sculptors, such as Stephanie, led by Wilfred Stijger. The site, under constant motion, acted as a backdrop to a series of interventions from the artists who produced works in and around the arena.

The team developing the arena into a moonscape, in an exhibition which does nothing to differentiate between production, presentation and exchange.

Craters begin to appear as the moonscape develops.

The sculpted arena became the backdrop for performance and events such as Colony Collapse which utilised bees.
