Now is the time to think of the world and how the way we choose to live our lives today will impact on its tomorrow. Our World in Focus presents images by selected Magnum photographers, interspersed with specially written essays and facts collected in the ten years between the Earth Summit in 1992 and the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002. They are juxtaposed in a way to inspire a conscious change towards sustainable lifestyles.
Over time, humanity does make progress. We are at a unique point in history as we are confronted with the realities of our impact on the planet. We are also beginning to discover the many ways we can enhance our lives, while protecting the Earth.

In August of 2002, the United Nations called some 180 heads of States to reunite at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. They assessed what has happened since the Earth Summit in 1992 and assembled the data. Through images and facts spanning these past ten years and specially commissioned essays,
Our World in Focus raises awareness and inspires us to make sustainable lifestyle choices.

The photographs for this project are drawn from the archives of the prestigious cooperative Magnum Photos, and from selected additional photographers. Edited by Francesca Sorrenti, each image was carefully selected to visually represent the nine chapters reflecting various aspects of human life: people, nature, food, shelter, community, pleasure, tragedy, economy, and progress.

The preface is by Nitin Desai, the Secretary General of the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development. Prominent international figures offer essays to accompany each chapter, sharing considerable knowledge on global issues. Contributors include: His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Her Majesty Queen Noor, John Elkington (Economist and Chairman of SustainAbility), Tom Lovejoy (Chief Biodiversity Advisor to the President of the World Bank), Peter Seligmann (Founder and CEO of Conservation International) and Maurice Strong (Special Advisor to the Secretary General of the United Nations).

In his essay to accompany the chapter on tragedy, the Dalai Lama writes:

'In human societies there will always be differences of views and interests. But the reality today is that we are all inter-dependent and have to co-exist on this small planet. Therefore, the only sensible and intelligent way of resolving differences and clashes of interests, whether between individuals or nations, is through dialogue. The promotion of a culture of dialogue and non-violence for the future of mankind is thus an important task for the international community. It is not enough for governments to endorse the principle of non-violence or hold it high without any appropriate action to promote it.'

Our World In Focus draws on this theme of inter-dependence, and brings together the artistic and the environmental, providing an accessible forum to address world-wide issues on sustainability.
