Nicknamed the ‘Frontline’, because of the racial hostility faced by residents, the area developed a negative reputation. Wedderburn’s images instead show an intimate portrait of a community shaped by resilience, friendship, enterprise, creativity and style.

Shot in vivid colour, the photographs are in contrast to the grey industrial grit that has dominated representations of northern cities. A self-taught photographer, Wedderburn’s social-documentary-style of photographs give an insider portrait of a city and a Black population that has been rarely represented in mainstream media. His photographs burst with energy, vibrancy and life, depicting the Frontline as a place full of activism, music, creativity, style and fashion. A place where generations hang out at cafes, hire films from the local video shop, where romances blossom, where endless football games are won and lost, where men shoot the breeze over a game of pinball, and where cars, a source of pride for their owners, are characters in their own right. All to the beat of sound systems playing reggae, roots, and dub.

The late discovery of Wedderburn’s photographs, kept in plastic bags and negative folders for forty years, gained their well-deserved public recognition as one of the key exhibitions during Bradford’s tenure as UK City of Culture 2025. Frontline: Bradford 1984/85, Wedderburn’s first photobook, is an irreplaceable visual record of a period in British history, with a distinctive contribution to documentary and vernacular photography.

Frontline: Bradford 1984/85 features essays from writer and professor Carol Tulloch and journalist Lanre Bakare, with a foreword by renowned photography curator and editor of the book Anne McNeill.
